Pioneer of Nature Conservation and Sustainable Development of Melawi Regency

Perkumpulan Sangga Utama Alam Raya (SUAR), previously known as Suar Institute Suar Institute or SuaR Ins is a local civil society organization (CSO) based in Nanga Pinoh, Melawi Regency. The organization was established on 7 January 2005 based on Notarial Deed No. 7 with Notary Muda Mahendrawan, SH based in Pontianak Regency.

The renewal of the deed of establishment into the Sangga Utama Alam Raya (SUAR) Association No. 01, dated August 6, 2022, and confirmed by the Decree of the Minister of Law and Human Rights of the Republic of Indonesia Number AHU-0008407.AH.01.07. Year 2022 concerning the Ratification of the Establishment of the Sangga Utama Alam Raya Association.

SUAR aims to preserve the environment, manage natural resources sustainably, and empower the potential of human resources through education, training, and political economy organizing to achieve an independent and prosperous society.

Sangga Utama Alam Raya was established against the backdrop of the following:


Melawi is Part of Heart of Borneo

Melawi Regency is one of the regencies in the Heart of Borneo (HoB) region in West Kalimantan Province which has a strategic role in supporting the lives of the people through its natural resources;

Limited access and space to manage natural resources

Opportunities and space for community management of existing natural resources are still limited to support community welfare in accordance with the principles of sustainable development;

Lack of capacity in local resource management

The natural resources and strategic role of Melawi Regency have not been supported by the capacity and capability of existing human resources, especially in sustainable development issues;

There is no platform for environmental conservation

Melawi Regency, as a new regency established in 2003, does not yet have CSOs that are concerned with environmental and sustainable development issues.
